The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) prepares students for positions of leadership in health care policy and management by providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary to address fundamental issues in today’s complex and dynamic health care environment. The Department’s mission is to advance theory and practice that improve the public’s health, avert disease, and strengthen the health care system and its component organizations.

Masters of Public Health

The M.P.H. Degree in Health Policy and Management prepares students for careers in the healthcare market in the arena of public health policy and healthcare management. The role of the health professional in the development of public health policy, planning for social change, and influencing social policy is examined. Students evaluate the role of governmental institutions in the policy process, examine policy models, and learn how health policy in the United States is uniquely different from that of other countries. This concentration provides core competency in management skills and knowledge. The range of work includes multiple public and private settings, healthcare, preventive and regulatory, personal and community health promotion and service applications.

Doctor of Public Health

The Health Policy and Management concentration of the Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) program is an advanced, professional degree designed for students with the Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree or its equivalent and who intend to pursue leadership careers as public health professionals. The health policy and management concentration provides students with a broad education that advances the public’s health through the integration and application of a broad range of knowledge and analytical skills in public health leadership and practice, policy analysis, program development and management, coupled with advanced preparation in a specific discipline in the field. The program is designed to prepare graduates to become competent practitioners, research scientists and public health advocates; conducting original research; designing, implementing and evaluating health intervention programs; disseminate knowledge to students and to the scientific community; and to translate research findings into practical applications and health policy by working collaboratively with communities and agencies in the field.
