SHS Goals and Objectives

Program Goals

The Public Health Program has three goals: instructional, research, and service. In order to meet the goals of the Program, a number of measurable objectives have been established.

Instructional Goal

The instructional goal of the Program is to provide students with discipline-specific and core competencies in the essential public health services. To achieve this goal, the program will prepare individuals at the master’s and doctoral levels through mentoring and training in public health, with a focus on the underserved and at-risk populations in Mississippi, the nation and the world. Our measurable objectives include:

  1. Conduct annual assessment of the curriculum content for the M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. programs
  2. Assess, modify and standardize all syllabi to reflect the overarching M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. core competencies in the essential public health services
  3. Provide at least one advisement encounter per student each semester (two per academic year)
  4. Monitor level of student satisfaction with curricula through course evaluations and exit interviews per semester and alumni surveys every two years
  5. Provide at least one faculty or student international experiential learning opportunity per year through travel abroad to provide cultural awareness and exposure to other public health systems
  6. Maintain a graduation rate of at least 80% within three years of matriculation for M.P.H. students and 80% within six years for Dr.P.H. students

Research Goal

The research goal of the Program is to provide leadership and advance social justice through evidence-based scientific inquiry, generate knowledge in the reduction of risk and prevention of disease and disability among underserved communities and at-risk populations n Mississippi, the nation and the world. Our measurable objectives include:

  1. Pursue an interdisciplinary research project annually
  2. Increase the number of faculty peer-reviewed publications
  3. Submit at least three faculty-student-peer-reviewed publications per academic year

Service Goal

The service goal of the Program is to provide technical expertise, advocacy, and translational resources to the Program's internal stakeholders (university, school, departments, and program) and external stakeholders (local, national, and global communities, public agencies, and the private sector). Our measurable objectives include:

  1. Inform the House and Senate of Public Health and Welfare Committees of the Mississippi State legislature of health-related issues including health disparities prior to the annual legislative session
  2. Offer at least one short, intensive training session or workshop for community stakeholders on disease prevention and health promotion annually with partners such as the JSU Division of International Programs
  3. Host an annual health awareness forum for community-based organizations to address one of the Healthy People 2010 identified health disparity issues
  4. Increase the number of faculty peer-reviewers for public health professional journals or editorial boards from the baseline (2006-2007) by at least two faculty by 2008-2009
  5. Achieve a rating of at least 80% on the service component of the annual performance evaluation by 80% of the faculty
  6. Maintain job and academic placement rates of 80% within 12 months of graduation
