The field of public health has increasingly become a paramount profession utilized to understand the complex nature of disease prevention and control. The public health program within the School of Health Sciences at Jackson State University offers a rigorous academic research and practice experience designed to equip emerging public health professions with the skills necessary to make major contributions to the field. We offer a multi-disciplinary public health program with opportunities for students to become engaged in epidemiological and intervention research, public policy, program planning, and evaluation. We offer four concentration areas that include: 1) Epidemiology; 2) Behavioral and Health Promotion, 3) Health Policy and Management; and 4) Communicative Disorders. In addition, we offer students exposure to courses in biostatistics and environmental health. Our faculty members are interested and engaged in a variety of research areas that range from chronic disease epidemiology, adolescent and school health, environmental toxic agents, HIV prevention, research and survey methods, women’s health, aging, international health, speech pathology, and much more. Faculty members in the School of Health Sciences are committed to the academic development of its students. We insist on providing a supportive environment that will prepare our graduates to assume leadership roles in clinical settings, local and state government, academic institutions, national and international organizations, as well as federal agencies.
